More often than we care to admit, we live life based on the expectations of others. Even when it is far from what we want. Go into a career or specialty simply because people are telling us that is the next best thing. We know deep down that we will be miserable walking that path, yet we still trudge on. We may even have other alternatives, yet we still take the path that even sometimes brings misery…simply because that is what is expected of us. But can we truly say, “follow your passion?” Even when that passion is laced with uncertainties? And we all know the bills aren’t going to wait. So, how do you then find a balance between your passion and your job? Especially if your passion is not embedded in your job?
I’d say as much as possible, once you’ve taken up a job and that is what is paying the bills, then find something that you love about that job. And ensure you hold on tight to it. Then take up something you’re passionate about in addition – even if its not paying the bills. The mistake most make is thinking it has to be something grand. Little things like dancing, writing, learning a new skill are all part of it. But don’t neglect your job at the expense of a passion that is not paying the bills yet. Finally, when you now have enough money to put more time into what you’re passionate about, then you can put more into your passion.

I have always loved to write and the best in English position was for either me or my friend Olamide Parakoyi. My mind is a maze filled with the wildest imaginations. I am lucky enough to be in a specialty that I really love. I recall that a lot of my trainers wanted me to do other specialties because they felt I had too much ‘stuff’. I knew exactly what I wanted to do and I never faltered in that. Yet, I knew that I was still going to go back to writing because of how much joy it gives me.
But I didn’t abandon dermatology (which is paying my bills) for writing. When I write here most times, it is for the writer as much as it is for the readers…because it makes me happy. But if I was under pressure of waiting to sell my books before paying my bills, I would be under so much pressure..
Find joy in your work. Life can be so draining. Do something you’re passionate about. Even luckier is that person that his passion and job are one and the same. Stop living according to people’s expectations of you.
Many people are downright cranky because they have refused to find joy in the little things. And stop the silent comparison with others. Run your own race.
